This week you are FREE…free to discuss ANY homeostatic imbalance of the brain or spinal cord. Whatever interests you. If you know someone with a particular disorder/disease that you’d like to understand, discuss that. Can’t think of anything? Check your book – there are many great examples there. Outside sources may be required for this topic, so make sure they are RELIABLE, that you include citations AND full references, and that you do not plagiarize – put the information in your own words. 1) In a few sentences describe the cause (if known) of your chosen homeostatic imbalance. 2) Describe the location of the disorder in the brain or spinal cord, making sure to mention the specific area(s) that are affected. (e.g. for Broca’s aphasia, you’d mention that the damage has occurred to the frontal lobe of the brain…etc.) 3) Describe the symptoms of this disorder and link them back to the function of the area(s) affected. (e.g. for Broca’s aphasia, inability to make speech…inability to produce motor movements necessary for speech due to damage to the specific areas of the brain that control those movements…) 4) Describe the treatments, if any, that are currently available. 5) Make a meaningful replythat is at least a paragraph to the discussion below ^. I chose to do this topic on Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease when the nerve cells in a specific area of the area either die or become impaired somehow. The neurons in this area usually produce a certain amount of dopamine when functioning properly, but if it has become impaired it will produce less. This is how Parkinson’s disease is determined in people. People with Parkinson’s disease will also lose nerve endings, known as norepinephrine. 2. Parkinson’s disease is a disorder that affects nerve cells in deep parts of the brain called the basal ganglia and the substantia nigra. The nerves cells found inside of the substantia nigra produce a chemical called dopamine, which are responsible for relaying messages that plan and control body movement. Doctors are unsure on what causes the dopamine to lower inside the brain in most people, but it affects multiple activities physically. 3. There are a number of symptoms for Parkinson’s and they vary depending on the degree that the disease has gotten. Some of the symptoms include: decreased blinking, trembling in hands, arms, legs, jaw, or head, slowness of movement, impaired balance and coordination, stiffness, etc. The symptoms increase overtime as the disease progresses, but these are some of the most common ones found in most people. Other symptoms include: difficulty swallowing, chewing, and speaking, depression, insomnia, Freezing or being stuck in place and many more. It affects a lot of physical movements that the brain is in charge of and the imbalance causes many difficulties. 4. Most people with this disease are still able to live a fully healthy and active life, if treated carefully. The number one treatment for PD is self-care, meaning that are you staying active and making sure that you are exercising your muscles and joints any chance you get. Making sure that you are remaining on a healthy diet and eating properly is another important thing that people with this disease need to follow constantly. Other treatments are different medicines to help you keep the chemicals somewhat balanced in your brain. They have different medications that are used for different things, such as: drugs that can increase the amount of dopamine in your body, drugs that can assist with nonmotor symptoms, or drugs to help other brain chemicals. The main therapy for this diseased is called L-Dopa, which is a medication that increases dopamine in your brain. Surgery is the last resort with this disease, only if the disease worsens and the medications are not causing any difference.
